Welcome to 6th Grade Science, Math, and STEAM!

Welcome to 6th Grade Science, Math, and STEAM!

Here is a link to the class supply list.

How to help:

1. Please make sure your student charges their chromebook each night and puts it in their backpack for school. This is VERY important because a lot of our curriculum is online!

2. Help your child get into the routine of doing homework each night. Give them some time and space to complete it, and reach out to your teachers if help is needed!

GRADES: Please be sure to sign up for Synergy, as this is where you will be able to check grades and emails.

PE: Please make sure students wear shoes appropriate for PE Monday-Thursday. Keep in mind, they may get dirty on the field.

Art: Ms. Martina is a SPECTRA artist that will be teaching our students art once a week (instead of PE, that day).
NOVEMBER SCIENCE

NOVEMBER SCIENCE

This month we are finishing up our metabolism unit, by doing a "metabolism internship." Students have to design bars for workers and patients in a natural disaster, by meeting their growth & repair and energy needs (it needs to be cheap and taste good too!)

Next, we will move on to a unit about traits and reproduction. Students will learn about how genes and traits are passed down to offspring. We will do this by "breeding" spiders.
NOVEMBER MATH

NOVEMBER MATH

This month we are still working on ratios and what the word per means in math. We will then move on to unit rates (think about cost per item when you go shopping) and percentages.

We continue to do differentiated math centers, with some groups getting intervention or extension with Ms. Gill.
NOVEMBER ART AND STEAM

NOVEMBER ART AND STEAM

The students have had a few classes with Ms. Martina now, and are working hard on a long term project, where they create a creature/monster and draw its body, bones, facial expressions, etc. Next step is making it out of clay!

In class, we continue to do Artist Wednesday each week, so the students can practice observing and creating art.

In STEAM, we are working on building a body and all of it's systems. We started learning about wire sculpture too, and will continuing learning about prosthetics. We also meet with our 2nd grade reading buddies every Friday to help them practice and improve their skills.
AUGUST SCIENCE

AUGUST SCIENCE

This year we are using Amplify Science (students log in through Clever/Google). Students complete the lessons each day on this website. They may need help remembering to click the "turn in" button! :)

We will begin the year by learning about Microbiomes, which means very very small living things!

We will investigate how microorganisms, in and on your body, help you survive. Also, we will will look at case studies and analyze evidence, to determine how antibiotics and fecal transplants can affect your health.
AUGUST MATH

AUGUST MATH

This year we are using Open-up Resources Math.

This is the link for students.

This is the link for parents, guardians, & families.

We will begin by reviewing and learning about Area & Surface Area, which means we will be looking at shapes a lot!

Ms. Jennifer Gill will be coming in to our class for centers (hopefully once per week) to work with kids who need help catching up and kids who need a challenge!
AUGUST ART AND STEAM

AUGUST ART AND STEAM

We will be doing a lot of getting to know you activities, as well as shoe design, non-objective art, and bio poems.

Fairy tale STEAM activities: We will work to "solve" problems that fairy tale characters have by creating, airplanes, notes to throw, a wind powered coach, and much more!

Coding: Students will be introduced to block coding in several different places. Experienced coders can work on improving their skills, with more advanced projects.

As we move forward in STEAM, we will begin to learn about prosthetics, dams, elements of art, biodiversity and more!

NON-OBJECTIVE ART
An example of non-objective art

This painting is an example of non-objective art, which means art that does not show/represent any realistic shapes/things.

The 7 elements of art line, shape, form, color, value, texture, space
We have learned about the elements of art and how to observe them in famous art pieces:
-line
-shape
-form
-color
-texture
-value
-space
